Songs on Saturday ~ Daytona

twelve wild horses in silver chains

Back in the day, when Chris Rea could still sing and great cars didn’t rely on computers to make them work, Pininfarina designed the Daytona.  I would contend one of the 10 best-looking cars ever made.

I’ve been to Daytona Beach, and I even know what Daytona means, but I’ve never driven a Ferrari Daytona, not anywhere.  And actually, I’d rather own a Jaguar V12 E-Type, but then I am English and not Californian

home isn’t always where the heart is

Back at home after a sunshine vacation.  All of which was good, except for the sick flight home.  I thought I was looking for the summer ~ seems the truth is, I was trying to fill an empty place in my heart.

Today, here in England it’s cold, wet, grey.  My friends are acting strangely.  I’ve been as sick as a dog for a week.

I’m beginning to wonder if coming home was such a good idea.

time I found a way to fly away

Your Warm and Tender Love

I will not heal by going back to what broke me

This track is from Chris Rea ~ the album, the Road to Hell.  That’s where I’m going now.

And it’s no fault but my own.

Please listen responsibly.

echoes of better days

Tunes on Tuesday ~ Driving Home for Christmas

the weather outside is frightful, but she is so delightful

I well remember those Christmas Eve drives north from my home near London to see family and friends in the cold North East of England.  Not fun at all in some of the cars I owned ~ a Triumph TR6 is not good in the snow.

These days, most younger people have no idea how to drive safely in really bad weather.

Please listen responsibly.

I’ve done that more times than I’d care to remember.

Tunes on Tuesday ~ Chris Rea

Be charitable and loving when winter comes howling in.

Middlesbrough Man Chris Rea is a brilliant exponent of the slide guitar ~ athough I like him best because he likes great cars, including the iconic 7.

Please listen responsibly.

don’t drive a 7 in winter

unless you’re very brave

on the beach

P1030480If I could, I would spend all of my time on the beach.  My local beach, or in Australia, California, Miami, Texas, or  the Windies…  just so long as there is the sea and the sky.  Lighthouses, a cool villa, and a gorgeous woman would be good too.  I would settle for a hut to sleep in.  To be honest, I can do without the guy playing the guitar.

Chris Rea ~ On The Beach

please listen responsibly

On The Beach is also the title of a novel by Nevil Shute, which was turned into a chilling movie starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner.   (I think Ava Gardner has such a look of a dirty vamp about her.)

please watch responsibly

If your girl talks about the 2000  Armand Assante movie, it’s cool if you not only know about the earlier film, but also the book.

As for my beach.  It’s lonely, cold, and grey down by the sea today.

you’re not just a number

P1020119

When men have a cold it’s like the biggest medical disaster ever inflicted on the human race.  Well, today I have a cold, and I’m feeling thoroughly miserable.  Autumn’s shadowy fingers are crowding around the garret, the sky is grey, and so is the sea.  All I want to do is sleep.  I don’t feel quite human, more like a number standing in line waiting for I don’t know quite what.

The hot California desert calls, and so does the open road, and neither of them are going to see me today.  Anyhow, there’s no way I’m alert enough to drive a Seven until this cold had gone.  When I’m well, do I drive down through France our head West?

Chris Rea ~ Auberge

This music video is as weird as I feel right now.  I may have a fever.  I have a fever, it’s 101.  Man-flu strikes again.

Please listen responsibly.

When driven with real bravery, a Lotus / Caterham 7 is the fastest point-to-point car you can get on English country roads.
